Chapter 13

Sophie

Dinner at the Augathella pub that night was a joyful affair. The celebration for the opening of the Vintage Tea Room moved to the pub, and many people came over to Jenna and congratulated her. Sophie was pleased to see that Luke had snagged the chair next to Jenna. Every time she’d looked over, they were deep in conversation, and Jenna’s cheeks held a rosy flush.

Sophie had found her second wind and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Kent raised his eyebrows when she took turns holding little Meggie and Munro while Callie and Braden enjoyed their dinner.

She closed her eyes as Meg snuggled into her, savouring that delightful, sweet baby scent. At least she knew she could hand Meg back to Callie.

‘Do you want a nurse, Kent?’ Sophie asked.

‘Too right I do. Pass my little niece over here.’

Sophie handed Meg over to Kent and then turned to Braden, taking Munro from him.

‘It’s fabulous having babysitters in the family,’ her brother said. ‘Now, I can enjoy my dinner and use both hands.’

Sophie smiled as Braden leaned over to Callie and kissed her cheek. Braden’s happiness was complete. Ruth and her husband had joined them at the pub for dinner, and Rory, Nigel and Petie sat opposite Sophie and Kent. Her nephews were growing quickly, and Rory’s conversation with Kent about the cattle agistment made her realise there was another cattleman in the making.

Nigel? She wasn’t so sure about her middle nephew, but time would tell.

And little Petie. Her youngest nephew held a special place in her heart.

Sophie watched Kent as he turned from Rory and looked down at Meggie in his arms. Yes, seeing him hold the tiny baby made her feel happy. It suited him perfectly, and as he gazed down at the baby with her long eyelashes framing her cheeks, and her sweet little rosebud mouth pursed in a cute bow, Sophie knew in her heart that they would have children one day. She had to gain her confidence; it would be cruel to deprive Kent of the chance to be a dad.

For some reason, there had been a shift in her thinking this weekend, but she still held doubt.

As they headed out to the car park after Sean called last drinks, Jenna caught up with Sophie. ‘You’ve worked your butt off, Sophie, and I’m going to pay you for today. If you won’t give me your bank details, I’ll just give you cash,’ Jenna said.

‘No,’ Sophie replied. ‘That’s an argument you’re not going to win. It was my pleasure to be able to help, and having us volunteer gives you such a good start to your business.’

‘Well, I owe you,’ Jenna said.

Sophie shook her head. ‘It’s the country way, Jenna. It’s the way we do things out here.’

Jenna hugged her. ‘Thank you. You’re a good friend.’

‘And that’s exactly right,’ Sophie said. ‘It’s friendship. You came to town, you didn’t know anybody, and I was more than happy to help. Now I’m sure you’ll be hiring some more staff, and I’ll get back to my normal routine.
